The couple met soon after Sean’s divorce from Madonna in 1989, and married in 1996. Divorce rumors began to emerge in 2007, but that was called off four months later. Then they broke up again in April and May of 2009 – but those splits were also aborted.
Finally, on August 12th of last year Robin filed for divorce, and made it clear to reporters she had no desire or plans to reconcile.
Today it was announced that the now-ex couple have reached a private agreement over child support, division of assets and custody of their son, 17-year old Hopper. The final papers were filed in Marin County, CA, on July 22, and the pair are now legally single.
Robin, 44, told People she’ll remain friends with her former spouse, but Sean does not seem to have similar plans.
“Robin is a ghost to me now,” he told Vanity Fair back in June. “We spent all those years together. Now she’s just…gone.”
But he seems to be taking the break-up quite well – He’s already been romantically linked with fashion model Jessica White, who’s 23-years his junior.
Stay tuned – with Sean’s reputation and Robin’s new single life, I get the feeling they may soon have surprises to share.
In the meantime Sean is circling another hot new acting role. Penn is in negotiations to star in a film about the eccentric literary editor Max Perkins, who oversaw the release of works by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway.
“Genius” is based on A. Scott Berg’s National Book Award-winning 2008 biography, “Max Perkins: Editor of Genius.”
Bill Pohlad, who hasn’t shot a movie since the 1990 indie “Old Explorers,” has been picked to direct. In recent years, he has focused on producing films through his River Road banner, including “Brokeback Mountain,” “The Runaways” and the Penn-directed “Into the Wild.”
